Scratch marks inside the gas chambers in Auschwitz. This is a really shocking picture.
My father was stationed in Germany for six years when he was in the army, and he told me about his visits to Auschwitz. He said that when you walked into the crematoriums, you could still smell the faint scent of burning flesh and there was still scorch mark and ash on the floor and walls. Outside of the gas chambers, there were boxes of wedding rings and shoes and glasses. Now let me tell you, my father is not an emotional man at all. Rock solid. But he opened up and told me that seeing this moved him to tears because he couldn’t comprehend the fact that a man like Hitler could manipulate humans to do such gruesome things to one another. I often think of how badly I want to go here, just to see all of this.
